Faith and Tolerance

Freemasonry is not a religion, nor a substitute for any religion. It requires of its members only a belief in a Supreme Being or Creative Power, leaving the form and expression of that faith entirely to the individual Brother.

In our lodges, a Volume of the Sacred Law (VSL) is always open during meetings. Within the Grand Lodge of British Freemasonry in Germany (GL BFG), the King James Bible serves as the official VSL. Its presence is symbolic, and all scriptural references within the ritual are restricted to the Old Testament, reflecting the universality of moral teachings rather than the doctrines of any single faith.

Because we welcome Brethren from many religions and convictions, we also honour their faiths by placing their Holy Scriptures alongside the VSL on the Worshipful Master’s pedestal. At present, in addition to the King James Bible, a Qur’an and a Torah are displayed, symbolising respect for the diverse beliefs united in our lodge under the principles of Brotherly Love, Relief, and Truth.
