Charity is one of the cornerstones of Freemasonry. From its earliest days, the Craft has taught that generosity of heart and compassion toward others are essential duties of every Freemason.
Charity in Freemasonry is not measured only in financial giving, but also in personal involvement, care, and support. Each Brother is encouraged to contribute according to his means and abilities — whether by helping a fellow Brother in need, assisting in community projects, or supporting larger charitable causes at home and abroad.
Within the Grand Lodge of British Freemasonry in Germany (GL BFG) and the United Grand Lodges of Germany – Brotherhood of Freemasons (VGLvD), Lodges regularly contribute to relief funds and local charitable initiatives. Our own Lodge Bridge of Fellowship No. 929 participates through donations, community engagement, and by promoting the Masonic ideal of “Relief” — extending a helping hand wherever it is needed.
In Hannover, the Lodge has supported social projects such as Bed by Night, which provides safe emergency accommodation for homeless youth, and the Zahnmobil, a mobile dental clinic offering free treatment to those without access to regular healthcare. These initiatives embody the practical side of Masonic compassion — helping quietly, effectively, and without distinction of background.
Freemasonry teaches that genuine charity begins with understanding: the willingness to see the world through another’s eyes.
In practising compassion, patience, and tolerance, every Brother helps to build a more humane and harmonious society — one good deed at a time.
